Operations Manager – Utility-Scale Solar Assets – Johannesburg

If you have an electrical engineering degree and have at least 4+ years of hands-on experience working on the O&M aspects of grid-tied solar PV projects (ranging from 30MW up to 400MW) with exposure to the elements of construction project management, you could be the ideal candidate to join this tight-knit IPP brand that already has over 600MW of renewable energy projects under their belt. They are looking for an Ops Manager who can ensure that all project-related activities are performed in accordance with the O&M objectives and that best practices are adopted, thus ensuring optimal performance. You will be based in Joburg and oversee a number of power plants across the Sub-Saharan Region. BUT... what is more exciting about this opportunity, is that it is a new position within the firm, which means you get to use your entrepreneurial nature to develop the operations department and make it your own. We are looking for someone who is incredibly hands-on and will not only be able to head the O&M department (70% of the time) but also oversee the construction aspects of contractors working on projects (30% of the time). 

You will find yourself constantly travelling to the project sites as you will be responsible for overall operations management, technical leadership as well as the contracts and procurement management. With 4+ years of experience under your belt, you will have a depth of knowledge that will lend itself to the success of the plants. You will be a well-versed leader, ensuring that the site team maintains a high level of motivation and that their outputs positively impact the various solar plants' operational performance. From handling SHEQ compliance through reviewing contractors' reports, writing reports, and managing risk, you will need to ensure that there is no room for operational or financial losses on the project. We are looking for and Ops Manager who can hit the ground running and drive all operational aspects of the numerous IPP plant. Your SCADA skills should be off the charts, as you will be constantly making use of the relevant software which will pull into your operational management activities. Furthermore, you will be someone who sees the bigger picture and will consistently look for ways to optimize the current processes and policies within your department.

Electrical engineering degree or diploma is required
Relevant professional registrations are highly advantageous

4+ years’ experience working on solar PV plants with strong exposure to the O&M aspects of them
Must have proven experience working on projects ranging from 30MW to 400MW in size
Excellent understanding of health and safety regulations
Experience with capturing maintenance feedback on management systems

Responsible for the overall performance of the O&M department

Excellent reporting skills in order to effectively communicate with shareholders and other parties about the performance of the plant
Applicable software such as SCADA, AutoCAD, PVSyst, etc
Strong management and reporting skills
